Residential, commercial, or industrial spaces all have one thing in common – lighting. Every space needs lighting to highlight and complement. However, lighting tends to be more functional than aesthetic. But can lighting be artistic without losing its function?
The age-old phrase of “form versus function” – should it be form over function or function over form? Why not both?
With modern technology and the use of LED lights, the world of lighting is now taking on a different approach. Designers are using lighting to evolve the way a space is perceived. Getting creative with the use of lighting can completely change the dynamics of a room or space.
Instead of simply installing recessed can lights or troffers, designers are looking for other ways to create functional lighting that is also a work of art. Some examples include under cabinet lighting, stair lighting, and unique chandeliers.
As a designer myself, I find myself challenging the way a space is showcased, how it can be improved, and how to introduce form with function. Is it possible?
I’ve always been drawn to lighting – adding light to the darkness. But also, pushing the boundaries of form versus function. How can I create a work of art that is also useful? Most people will accept the existing lighting in a space but will purchase works of art and decor to fill a space and “make it their own”. Why not do the same for lighting? It is something that is inevitable, necessary even. Why do we tend to look passed that when designing or remodeling a space?
To get creative when designing or remodeling a space, the use of LED strip lights often come in handy. Affordable, easy to install, and customizable.
As seen below, the space before is a typical, nothing special staircase.
Simply adding a strip under a stair banister completely changes the mood! It also has the function of lighting up the stairs to better see at night…
Even using string lights to highlight a piece of furniture or as a “curtain” can update the space:
IMO, lighting doesn’t have to be boring, expensive, or inadequate. I think with some creativity and “thinking outside the box”, you never have to lose the function for the sake of form. They can go together. This is what I have built my business around, thinking outside the box and finding ways to be creative without losing function. Or vice versa. 😉
